SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – Hong Kongers have given tourists from China the nickname ‘locusts’ because of their tendency to buy out or devour everything they come into contact with.

The behavior isn’t limited only to tourists, particularly with globalization and China opening its borders to imported products.

This past week supermarkets in Sydney, Australia, suffered shortages of organic baby formula. Brands such as Bellamy, Aptamil Gold, and A2 Platinum were particularly hard hit.

Many Chinese nationals living in Australia began buying baby formula in bulk at their local supermarket to resell online on Taobao, China’s version of eBay. Prices for a tin of baby formula can range from USD $25-$40.

The shortage has left Australian parents outraged. One woman posted to Facebook and said that Chinese shoppers had cleared out the entire stock and wouldn’t even give her one tin.

A distrust of Chinese-manufactured formula began in late 2008, after nearly 300,000 babies fell sick and 6 died after drinking formula deliberately laced with the chemical melamine.
