This tutorial is from a japanese needle felt book which I bought because I thought the roll cake looked so adorable! The trick is to use melamine foam for the body which makes it very easy to maintain the right shape. Melamine foam can also be used as a felting mat and you can buy it from any DIY shop (usually sold as “Dirt Eraser” or “Magic Eraser”). Look for generic drugstore brands which are plain white and cheap.
Because this project wasn’t from a kit, I bought the wool and eyes separately (links below). I also used leftover wool and thread from previous Hamanaka kits. Each cake takes about an hour to make. Needle felt looks nicer if the surface is very smooth so you can always spend a bit more time making sure everything is nice and dense.
