China’s milk industry devastated previously
by melamine is hit hard again by the “leather milk.”
Official media claimed that Agriculture Ministry’s
sampling of fresh dairy products had found no problem.
However, consumers’ confidence couldn’t be rebuilt.
A media survey shows, nearly 70% respondents said
they wouldn’t consume domestically produced milk.

The scandal wiped out China’s milk product market.
It has boosted the dairy market in Hong Kong
and Macao. Except for the dairy product merchants,
this is good news to none.

The public panic stems from Agriculture Ministry’s
2011 fresh dairy quality and safety inspection program,
which requests to test melamine,
“hydrolyzed leather protein,” and alkalis.
Afterwards, it was officially claimed that
no prohibited substances had been found.

The public is used to reading between the lines.
A parent of a melamine-milk victim Jiang Yalin said,
Agriculture Ministry started inspection, because
there are likely many producers of 「leather milk.」
Ms. Jin from Shanghai revealed, one of her relatives
works in a well-known dairy firm and their babies
never have domestically produced milk powder.

because many dairy products in China are
of poor quality.

rebuild consumer confidence.
A recent media survey of some supermarkets and
baby product stores in Beijing show that
70% of respondents don’t buy domestic infant formula.

Chinese media heap the blames on the failure of

Chinese columnist Ye Tan of UK’s Financial Times
said, the government cannot escape blame.

Ye said, only when the Chinese authorities couldn’t
cover up the “kidney stone baby” scandals,
did it start to fix the melamine milk problem.
However, they punish both perpetrators and parents.
They didn’t tackle the root of the problem.

According to China’s official statistics,
due to a serious lack of credibility, the annual loss
due to “acts of dishonesty” is over 580 billion yuan,
equivalent to 37% of China’s financial revenue.
It seriously damages the interests of consumers
and contributes to political corruption.

I had a few melamine shelves laying around and I decided to upcycle them to a scrap bin for my shop. The bin’s design is something like an extruded hexagon. That kind of shape is fairly easy to make and it’s space efficient.
