When cutting plywood, melamine, veneer or many other flat materials, it’s often difficult to avoid splintering and blowout from the saw teeth breaking through the edge of the workpiece.

This trick prevents splintering and blowout to result in a cleaner edge.

First, wrap masking tape around the workpiece where the cut is to be made.

Then mark the cut line with a pencil along the masking tape.

Finally, make the cut along the line.

Hint: Use a straight piece of timber as a guide to get perfectly straight cuts.

Bench space is in short supply and I needed somewhere to put my batteries. Knocked up a quick little shelf out of scrap melamine covered chipboard – the vid is 6 minutes, realistically took me about 20 mins due to filming, probably would have taken about 10 mins otherwise.
